U23s come from behind to beat Swansea

Francis Jeffers got his first win as stand-in manager of Everton's Under-23 side thanks to Shane Lavery's late winner.

The Blues were trailing at the Landor Training Centre to Jordon Garrick's heavily-deflected shot when Luke Garbutt struck from the penalty spot to level the game.

The contest looked to be heading to a 1-1 draw as Brandon Cooper was sent off for a foul on Jose Baxter and the Everton man was forced off with an injury that also reduced the visitors to 10 men as Jeffers had used all his substitutes.

But Fraser Hornby found Lavery with a cross and the forward finished emphatically in stoppage time to hand the Blues the points.

Scorers: Garbutt (74'), Lavery (91')

Everton U23s: Hewelt, Charsley, Garbutt, Adeniran, Feeney, Foulds, Evans, Baxter [Y], Sambou (72' Hornby), Broadhead (71' Lavery), Bowler (76' Donkor).
Subs not Used: Hilton, Markelo.

Good start for Franny... keep it up cos it looks like Rhino could be with the first team for a fair while yet!

A well-deserved win from the youngsters who I thought were the better team throughout although both sides had chances to score more goals.

Our defence dealt with most things quite easily, Garbutt and Charsley were the full-backs , Foulds and for me our best player Feeney as the centre-backs. We played mainly 4-4- 2 with Broadhead and Sambou up front, Adeniran and Baxter in the middle of the four with Evans and Bowler out wide. This was the first time I've seen Bowler play for 90 minutes and I thought he grew into the game more and more as it went on , playing a part in setting up Lavery who was fouled for the penalty and creating space in the middle and giving the pass out to Hornby who crossed for Lavery to score the winner.

Lavery made quite an impact coming on for about the last 20 mins, creating a bit of space in the box resulting in the penalty and then neatly controlling Hornby's cross and smashing a wonderful shot into the roof of the net to end a spectacular move that started not far from our corner flag. Lavery has suffered from a number of injuries since he burst on the scene with the U18s. He's pacy but tiny compared to the huge Fraser Hornby but this match will do his confidence the power of good. He wanted to take the penalty he earned but Garbutt was having none of it.

A pleasing result for Jeffers too, as the first two substitutions he made turned the game.

Phill thanks for the review of the game.

Great to see the lads return to winning ways after the recent results.

Swansea City YouTube channel has nearly 5 mins of the game on it.

Damn, I live a short walk away from Swansea's training ground, would've gone along to watch if I'd known EFC were in town.

Thanks, Phill.

How about Jose Baxter? How did he do?

I think they should amend the rules so that you are allowed a 4th substitution if after having all 3 substitutes on, one of your players gets injured (okay, I get it that managers will ask players to fake injury to come off, but I am sure something can be done about it). Especially if the injury was caused by a sending-off offence.

I've not watched much but a little disappointed so far in what I've seen of Sambou this season. He's doing ok but has not kicked on yet like I hoped he might. A shame as if he was banging them in then he'd likely get a shot at the first team given our lack of striking options.

David #5.To be honest I was quite disappointed with Jose Baxter . He was ok but nothing special. I watch a lot of local semi-pro football when I can , and every so often an ageing ex-pro comes on , and you can see the skill he used to have in flashes but it’s no longer there for a full game, that’s Jose for me. We had two free kicks that he took instead of Garbutt and both were ballooned high and wide. For me he should have come off instead of Antony Evans. It’s a difficult one, I really wish him well but wonder if he’s stopping another youngster like Anthony Gordon coming through. A tough call .

Charlie #3, that’s how I watched it via the Swansea feed which was very good. Sometimes these smaller clubs show the games on their sites / Facebook channel , Derby did the same.

Sam #7. I agree about Bassala Sambou, he’s really not kicked on and is far away from a first team shot in my view. We’ve lacked an out and out goalscorer for the U23s for a few seasons. I’m happy to give Sambou more time, Henen has proved this season that youngsters progress at different rates, but he’s going to have Fraser Hornby and Shayne Lavery pressing him for his spot now , which is no bad thing.

Oh , and a final thing. They got the team sheet numbers wrong, Evans was 11 and Josh Bowler 7 , so it’s likely that any reports you read have the wrong people mentioned e.g. in the report above it’s Evans who came off not Bowler. Bowler played a part in both goals.

Thank you Phill. I remember watching Baxter in the Youth team, years ago, and he seemed very promising. It has all been a bit of a disappointment.

Phill, yes I noticed they confused Evans and Bowler on the substitution. I had to have a second take.

Phill how did Charsley play at full back, it was Harry Charsley? He usually plays up front, seems a big change for him, can he become another Tommy Wright?

Dave, Charsley is more of a mid. Played ok last night.

See Dowell bagged himself the match ball today. Do we get him back in January?

Dave (#14), that's maybe three or four times Harry Charsley has played at right back, it's something Unsy did in pre-season; he also tried Danny Bramall there too in pre-season, he's another midfielder / winger.

Charsley was fine, but was nearly caught out late on from a free kick when he just stood there complaining as Swansea took it quickly and ran into the wide open space where he should have been.

Right back is interesting: without Kenny, we have no obvious replacement. Markelo is okay but I understood they wanted to try him further forward not just at right back. Liverpool lost today so we've closed the gap on them after our win.
