Lennon set for Burnley switch

Friday, 19 January, 2018 66comments  |  Jump to most recent

Aaron Lennon is on the verge of concluding a deal to join Burnley for a nominal fee.

The 30-year-old former Leeds United and Tottenham winger is out of contract at Everton in the summer but has decided to move on in the current transfer window.

The Blues have reportedly agreed a small fee for Lennon while the player is happy with the personal terms on offer and he will complete the switch to Turf Moor if he comes through a medical.

Lennon was signed on a permanent deal by Roberto Martinez after a successful loan spell from Spurs.

He has made close to 80 appearances for Everton, scoring nine goals and, following psychiatric treatment last spring, he was brought back into the first-team fold earlier this season after falling out of favour last term.

Signed for comparative buttons, tried his heart out, had some issues for which he's spent time resolving and is now in a place where he'll not be surplus to requirements.

Never shirked... so for that, thank you for your time, Aaron, and good luck with Burnley.

A good move for Everton and Aaron. Lennon did a good job for us. Always grafted and caused mischief winning us a few penalties but sadly not enough end product in way of goals and assists. Theo Walcott is a definite upgrade.

If Big Sam's news conference is to be believed we won't be getting the left back we need unless we move a couple of heads out of the club. Hopefully Besic, Niasse and Schneiderlin will follow Lennon out of the door this month so we get a left-back and maybe even Nzonzi.

Spurs fans still respect him, as will we, there's a few who have left recently who won't get as good a reception as Aaron Lennon will when he next plays at Goodison.

He came into the team a few times and embarrassed his teammates into a better work rate which coincided with a few upturns in team performances.

A true professional and a great role-model for the kids. Always gave his all and provided protection for Kenny, which others have not. Good luck Aaron you deserve it.

If Aaron Lennon's team-mates had shown half of his commitment and enthusiasm, we wouldn't be in the state we're in now.

It's players like Aaron and Steven Naismith, who are prepared to give their all for the cause, that supporters warm to. Good luck, Aaron, and thank you.

All the best lad on your new journey, should be a decent move for him at a stable club in Burnley.

I loved Lennon in his loan spell, came in January 2015 and transformed a season that was dying on its feet and lifted the work ethic of the whole squad.

He hit a rich vein of form midway through the 2015-16 season with 7 goals between January and March and was undroppable, his form was so consistent.

It started going downhill upon Roberto Martinez's ‘ departure but hopefully Aaron can find one last hurrah for a few more seasons at Burnley .

Best of luck, Aaron, you will be missed by me and I'm sure quite a few Everton fans for your endeavour and commitment at both ends of the field. You had your faults but you played and gave your best.

I hope you got at least a 2-year deal at Burnley. Very best wishes for your health and future in football.

An inspirational player and an inspirational man.

He had the courage to go public with a deeply sensitive health challenge... and to complete a magnificent comeback.

An exemplary competitor throughout his career, and occasionally brilliant, as Jim (#8) points out – he was clearly our best player during that two-month purple patch.

Wishing you the very best of success, Mr Lennon... and, more importantly, continued health and happiness.

Seems like a good deal for all parties involved. Lennon could always be counted on to offer dogged workrate and some extra defensive grit. It was nice to see him return from the first-team periphery this season, particularly after his mental health struggles. No goals, but he did win us some key penalties.

With Barkley and Lennon gone, Mirallas's Everton career all but officially over, Niasse and Besic being tipped to leave, Robles almost certainly gone at season's end and Baines/Jagielka nearing the end of their careers, there will soon be very few ties left to the Martinez era. Basically Coleman, McCarthy (whose Everton future also feels clouded in uncertainty) and Funes Mori (plus Holgate, who was signed on Martinez's watch). Kind of crazy.

I always rated Aaron highly, but at 30 years old and young players waiting for their chances, it is probably the right move for Aaron and the club.

Good luck at Burnley, Aaron, you'll be appreciated there also, I'm sure.

One of the few who didn't just give up under Unsworth or Allardyce. For that, I'll always hold him in higher esteem than pretty much every other player in the squad (not including the small children).

Hope he can kick on against anyone but us.

I think Kenny will miss him more than anyone else. Lennon is the only wide player we have who knows what to do off the ball. I would have kept him rather than sell him to a rival for 7th spot.

Good luck to him, I will always remember the look on his face when presented with the shirt.

Very harsh, Colin.

He transformed our season when he came in on loan. He has been average this year, but who hasn’t. I think it’s a good move for all concerned mainly due to his age and our enormous squad. CertInly no need to slap the lad on his way out.

I was always a fan of Lennon (Aaron not John), even before we signed him – don't ask me why, he's just one of those players that I always enjoyed watching for some reason.

The applause & ovation he got from the Spurs fans at Wembley last week was a nice touch as well – shows what people think of him. He's a highly regarded footballer and human. I'll remember him fondly.

A few years ago, Tottenham played AC Milan in Italy, in the Champions League. I forget the score; it was either a draw or Spurs won. Aaron Lennon probably had one of the best matches of his career, that evening, tearing apart Milan's defence.

I was elated when he joined us. His time with us had its ups and downs, and he had his health issues, which he overcame with great fortitude. A great professional, and a very nice lad.

All the best, Aaron. You deserve it.

If his team mates showed 50% of the hard work and professionalism that Aaron does, we wouldn't be in this mess. Coming back into the limelight after his troubles also took huge courage.

I'm not convinced Bolasie is the player he's cracked upbto be. Until his injury, many on TW were regularly complainung about his poor crossing, lack of goal threat, and inabilty to pick up his team mates in attacking positions, i.e. He was greedy.

Suddenly he's being hailed as the answer to our prayers, a returning hero!

Unless or until he proves he can do the job week in, week out, I'd rather keep the depedability of Lennon, who at leasr always gives his all to the team up front and in defence.

Peter F. Murray
36 Posted 20/01/2018 at 08:49:29
If Walcott's work rate does not match that of Lennon's, this like-for-like swap could come back to haunt us.

Sad that the club could find no room for a player who was both humble and honest. A rare commodity in the greedy, ego-driven world of Premier League football.

Jon Withey
37 Posted 20/01/2018 at 08:50:06
Thanks Aaron - so glad to see him back playing - never gave up.

With Walcott in it is a sensible move for all parties - Burnley have got a decent Prem player for peanuts.

James Marshall
38 Posted 20/01/2018 at 08:52:31
David - he may 'not be that good' but he's a player who always tried his absolute best and I admire that. So many of the don't as is horribly marked in our team this season.

I'm not that good either, but if a professional football team gave me a contract, I'd try hard every time I played and give it my best shot.

I hope you see what I'm getting at.

Ian Bennett
39 Posted 20/01/2018 at 09:00:56
Bill 13 - I think that's right. Apart from Lukuka, Martinez did nothing with a decent squad he inherited from Moyes.

His only saving grace was he developed Barkley and Stones, who promptly fled the nest.

Koeman an even bigger transfer flop. Apart from some kids that might make it, and probably do a Barkley or Stones, the rest have been garbage.

Dave Abrahams
40 Posted 20/01/2018 at 09:16:34
Like Brian Porter (36), I would keep Aaron in preference to Bolasie, much more of a team player, I think he will fit in well at Burnley who all play for each other for ninety minutes, like Lennon.

No teacher would write "Not very good" on any pupils report, would be liable to be sued if they did, not very good that Colin.

Colin Glassar

I respect all of your opinions but, imo, Lennon, Bolasie, Mirallas etc...are all very poor players. Hard working and committed (not Mirallas obviously) is no substitute for skill and intelligence.

I have high hopes for Theo as I think he possesses both qualities.

David, you should’ve seen some of the slanderous comments written on my reports.

Good luck in the future to a good dependable player, who always pulled his tripes out for our club. But I would think that if we are going to improve, then we need better players, who will also pull their tripes out.

Mirallas was/is a very moody player and good luck to him as well but we need better.

Bolasie hasn't done much more than dribble rings round himself. He's fast, a good man for dribbling but hasn'r shown much else. Hopefully he'll become more effective but I have me doubts.

I think we've got a better player in Theo Walcott than any of the other three; and if we need to trim the squad down then Aaron and Mirallas are probably a lot easier to sell/send out on loan than Bolasie, whose contract and wages are probably a lot higher than either. I think also that Sam Alladyce can help Bolasie become a more effective player regarding crosses and shots...I hope so, I should say!

As a blue brought up in the south, being labelled a 'cockney blue' is wide of the mark, Brian! Cockneys have to be born within the sound of Bow Bells, which means there are probably zero actual cockney blues on the planet as they all support Leyton Orient or West Ham.

There are definitely none at Stamford Bridge either, which always amuses me when Evertonians call Chelsea fans cockneys.

Brian Williams

James. This guy isn't "from the south" he's from Plaistow, where I believe you would have been able to hear the bells at one time? I didn't label you a "Cockney Blue" I was referring just to him.
I suppose Evertonians referring to Chelsea supporters as Cockneys is like Chelsea supporters referring to Evertonians as Scousers. It's a generalisation for sure but I'm not a Scouser and the fella that sits next to me at Goodison is Welsh.
The fella who kicks me in the back (accidentally but constantly) is in this instance a Cockney I believe, his description not mine mate :-)

Mind you I think he'd have had to be born in the 1800's to be 100% accurate. :-))

With James McCarthy out for the season I'd scrap Aaron's move to Burnley and keep him here. We need players who are interested and will play for the team... quite a few of those sort of players missing from the Everton team yesterday.

Best wishes to James McCarthy for a good recovery. You will be missed James, one of the few who looked like they wanted to win against West Brom.

Colin Glassar
59 Posted 21/01/2018 at 15:12:57
Are you serious Dave? Keep Lennon as cover for McCarthy to do what exactly? Do you want Lennon to move into a defensive MF position? I like Aaron. He works hard, he trains well, he seems to be a popular, model pro but he’s not a very good winger and he would be a disaster in MF. Effort and commitment are no substitute for skill and ability in my humble opinion.

Sandro to Newcastle on loan seems a far better move for all concerned.

Dave Abrahams
60 Posted 21/01/2018 at 15:26:03
Colin, read what I said above, he's interested and plays for the team so he is an immediate improvement on a lot of those who played yesterday no matter where he plays. But I'd have him on the wing, where he plays up and down all the time for the team.

You don't think he is a good player; I do, just different opinions, Colin.

Justin Doone
61 Posted 21/01/2018 at 20:14:00
I'm a fan of Lennon. He's not top class but a very good Premier League player. I see no reason to get rid of him. He's been one of our better players since Unsy brought him back in. He'll strengthen Burnley (our rivals) and cost then very little.

Our problem is Wallcott, Bolasie and Lennon all play in the same position and in the same headless chicken way. Head down, run fast, can't cross. Lennon is the only player I trust to work hard for the team.

I welcome Wallcott (who should play more central) and I'm glad to have Bolasie back but they are all inconsistent, headless mavericks that frustrate their own fans as much as the opposing defenders.

There is no thought or plan to what the team do. Bring in some pace for what reason? We already had it in that position. What about the left side?

Schneiderlin and Williams need to be rested, permanently. They can not be seen by rivals as an obstacle, merely something to jog past.

I wish JMc a speedy recovery but another limited headless player who needlessly runs 30 yards when marking a player 2 yards away is what he should be doing. He and Schneiderlin have been a disaster and are both poor players. They both should have been at the top of the 'move on list'.

I don't want Silva but at least the football would be better and therefore if he's still the Boards main target (God help us) then be proactive and agree a deal with him for the summer before someone else does. Don't announce it as a coup – just get it done and let us know once the season is finished.

Selling Lennon will be repeating the mistake we made when we sold Barry to the Baggies and the mistake Man City made when they sold Barry to us. Lennon has a good football brain, something that takes time to develop. It will be a while before Vlassic and Lookman are as effective as him.

There is a lot of talk about players slowing down when they turn 30 but it is relative. A player that is naturally fast will still be faster than most into his early 30s. Linford Christie was world champion at 100 meters at age 33 and he made the Olympic final at age 36.

I say keep Lennon.

Hope he does well. He is a tireless worker but sadly hasn't had the zip he had some years ago with Spurs.

He is an original winger type but these days they are asked to play as wing backs or full backs.

Alternatively, full backs are playing like wingers a la Seamus who has done well but for some becoming defenders does not make use of their real talent.

It's a funny old game today and in the right setup these wingers can excel but in a poor team like Everton they find it hard to shine.

The pattern continues. Unnecessary signings, unnecessary sales. The one concession I'd make is that we don't know whether Lennon wanted to go.
