Report: Tottenham to offer Harry Winks third new contract in 18 months

Harry Winks’ star is on the rise thanks to some impressive outings for club and country lately, and if the Times of London is correct, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to reward him with his third new contract since 2016.

Matt Hughes, writing for the Times, writes that Spurs are ready to offer Winksy a new contract that would double his wages to £40,000/week. This comes after a week that saw him not only get his first senior England call, but his first cap AND a start AND a 90 minute performance against Lithuania that saw several publications give him the Man of the Match award.

Winks is collecting new contracts like Panini cards. He first signed one back in the summer of 2016, then was offered renewed terms and a deal through 2022 last February, five months after his first contract. If Hughes is right, this would be his third, and it would be the most lucrative contract yet, though his wages would be nowhere near the top of Tottenham’s wage structure. The last Spurs player that I can recall getting that many new contracts in such short a time was Dele Alli.

That’s fine. Winksy is worth the money. He’s been impressive since returning from an ankle injury this season, and has been a more than capable passer in the center of midfield for both Spurs and England this season. With both Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama still injured, Winksy has probably played himself into a major rotation role in Spurs’ midfield. He’s also just 21 and will get better.

There are plenty of matches yet to be played, and we may get a clearer picture of where Winks stands in the pecking order when Pochettino announces his squad for this weekend’s league match against Bournemouth. One of Winks or Moussa Sissko will probably start a week from today against Real Madrid in the Champions League. That decision will probably give a strong indication just how much trust Mauricio Pochettino has in Harry Winks at this time.
