Spanish media thinks Harry Kane is worth as much as Neymar

Harry Kane is not for sale. But that doesn’t mean that the media isn’t going to speculate about a big blockbuster transfer either this January or next summer. According to Spanish daily Don Balón, Real Madrid are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur’s iconic striker, and are willing to spend upwards of €200m to make it happen.

Madrid president Florentino Perez knows he has aging stars in Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema on Madrid’s roster, plus an injury-prone star in Gareth Bale, and wants to reinforce with some of the best players in the world.

To put that in perspective, the world record transfer fee is currently €222m, which is what PSG spent for Neymar this summer. Don Balón would have you believe that a Kane transfer to Madrid would be at around the same level, though knowing Daniel Levy it would almost certainly be higher.

I don’t write this up because I think you should believe it. Actually, it’s the opposite: Don Balón is a Spanish tabloid that has a dubious record at best, and the sourcing on this rumor is pretty laughable. Tottenham Hotspur has repeatedly said that Kane is not for sale for any price. Harry himself has also repeatedly said that he’s not really interested in just making the most money and that he wants to stay at Spurs his entire career. That’s not going to stop what will be a near constant barrage of transfer rumors linking Kane with stupid money transfers to rich clubs various and sundry. This is a thing now, and we better start getting used to it.

So we can chuckle at this report and hand-wave it away. However, I just want to make this point: at this point in time, Tottenham Hotspur has a player who is potentially the most valuable striker in the world on its roster, and he doesn’t want to leave.
