Victor Wanyama targets Liverpool match for Tottenham return

Big Vic could be back before the end of the month.

We haven’t seen Victor Wanyama in a Tottenham Hotspur jersey since August 20. Vic has been dealing with a knee injury that he sustained in preseason and aggravated again in the 2-1 loss to Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.

The wait for him to return may soon be over. According to the Mail, Wanyama has a goal to return to fitness in time to play against Liverpool on October 22 at Wembley.

That’s great news for Spurs, who have certainly missed his marauding play in the center of midfield, but it’s slightly bad news for Wanyama, who looks likely to miss out on both Champions League games against Real Madrid later this month.

Spurs have been really stretched in their midfield depth department the past few weeks, with both Wanyama and Mousa Dembele out. It’s meant that Eric Dier has had to carry a lot of water lately. On the plus side, those absences have meant that Moussa Sissoko has needed to deputize in central midfield on a number of occasions — a position in which he has actually been quite useful. It’s also given opportunities for Harry Winks, and between club and country we’ve practically seen Winksy take the next step in his development in front of our very eyes.

Still, Wanyama adds something different to Spurs’ midfield that nobody else offers, and just for pure rotation options it will be wonderful to have him back.

I don’t think I have to mention this, but I will anyway: yes, this is the Daily Mail, and yes, you should be skeptical. However, this timeline would seem to mesh with the murmurs coming from of sources close to the club in recent weeks. Combine this with the continued rumors that Erik Lamela and Danny Rose are both close to a return, and suddenly it feels like we are on the verge of getting last year’s Tottenham back.
