Harry Kane: Spurs can win the Champions League

It’s safe to say that Tottenham Hotspur’s mammoth 3-1 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night has sent shockwaves through European football. Spurs, who got a brace from Dele Alli and a goal from Christian Eriksen, didn’t just beat the two-time European holders — they dominated them.

Central to Tottenham’s victory was their best player and vice captain Harry Kane, who put in an impressive performance. Afterwards, flush with confidence (one might say he was... wait for it... “buzzing”), Kane told the media that he believes Spurs can not only compete with the best in Europe — they can win the Champions League.

“Definitely, why not? We have to believe. Maybe nobody who watched that will want to play us although everyone in the Champions League is a good team. It will give us a lot of confidence and belief and we have to build on it.

“We got to the quarter-finals [in 2010-11] and Madrid knocked us out. We feel we can beat anyone. You have to beat the best teams to go far and that is what we will try to do.”

Harry Kane was a huge part of why Spurs were so good at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday. Kane’s impressive strength was on full display against Madrid, and he regularly outmuscled Real’s defenders to get into good positions. While he didn’t score, he had four shots (three of them saved), and was continually looking to set up his teammates, ending the evening with two key passes and an assist, including a gorgeous cross-field ball to Kieran Trippier that nearly resulted in another goal for Dele Alli, and an intelligent pass to set up Christian Eriksen’s goal in the second half.

Tottenham’s win Wednesday night ensured Spurs will progress to the next round of the Champions League, and Spurs have all but clinched finishing first in Group H, widely considered the “Group of Death” in this year’s competition. They can do so with any result in their next match against Dortmund in Germany on November 21.
