New England Revolution reportedly hire former Tottenham keeper Brad Friedel as next manager

Let’s hear it for former Tottenham Hotspur players making it in management! According to various American soccer sources including Ives Galarcep, former Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Blackburn goalkeeper Brad Friedel has been tapped to be the next manager of Major League Soccer side New England Revolution.

Friedel spent the final four years of his 21 year professional career at Spurs, playing 50 matches in north London. He broke the Premier League record for consecutive Premier League matches played while a Tottenham player, a streak that eventually reached 310 games. He was eventually supplanted in the starting 11 by Hugo Lloris, and Friedel eventually hung up his gloves at the end of the 2015 season.

Friedel worked with Tottenham’s academy as a coach for a while after retirement, then as a commentator for football matches in the United States and England for a few years, and spent the 2016-17 season as manager of the USA U19 squad. His role with the Revs will be his first professional management appointment.

Look, I don’t watch enough MLS (and certainly not enough New England Revolution matches) to have a comment on whether this is a good appointment or not. In a vacuum, though, seeing more former Spurs players break into management is only a good thing. Keep in mind that this hasn’t been officially announced by the Revolution, though by the time this article posts it may be official.
