Balague: Andre Gomes will not sign with Tottenham

Andre Gomes was supposed to be the break-glass-in-case-of-emergency midfield signing for Tottenham Hotspur, but it looks like that might not happen after all, if you believe Guillem Balague.

So keep in mind that we’re in the midst of Peak Transfer Window Crazy™ and that Balague is getting this report second hand. Still, he’s generally an excellent source for all things Spanish football.

Who knows what happened. Barca were reportedly ready to let Gomes go on a season long loan, but there was also talk that Spurs wanted to sign him permanently. Maybe the loan terms couldn’t be worked out, or maybe there was some sticking point in the deal that couldn’t be reconciled. Or heck, maybe Gomes just didn’t want to come.

None of us at Carty Free were all that enthused about potentially signing Gomes, but we acknowledge that Tottenham should probably sign SOMEONE for their midfield, lest we end up having to play Moussa Sissoko for 2000 minutes this season.

Still, unless we hear conflicting reports from some other source, we should maybe consider this transfer on the shelf for now.
