Everton make Dutch giant latest transfer target

All summer, Everton have been flying across Europe in search for their white whale - a striker to lead the line.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is one of England’s most promising young players, and Oumar Niasse looks like a super-sub extraordinaire. Neither, however, offers the cutting edge and ruthlessness that Romelu Lukaku offered, and so, the Blues’ attack continues to toil.

Olivier Giroud recently confessed to turning Everton down, and so it looks like that door is shut once and for all.

According to ESPN, Ronald Koeman and Steve Walsh will now turn to Sporting Lisbon’s towering Dutch hitman Bas Dost.

Everton director of football Steve Walsh watched Dost in action recently in last month's Champions League defeat to Barcelona with the striker coming off the bench for the second half.

Dost, 28, fits the bill for what Everton need up top. His style isn’t pretty - think battering ram, or perhaps the Incredible Hulk - but it’s wildly effective. He has scored 41 times in 53 (including 34 domestically during 2016-17) appearances for Sporting, and 48 in 117 for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga before that.

At 6’5”, the Dutchman could be the Fernando Llorente-style target that helps return Gylfi Sigurdsson to top form. Rated at around €16 million by Transfermarkt, Dost isn’t the flashiest signing, but could be Everton’s winter window savior.
