Everton and Onyekuru discuss January return

Henry Onyekuru has confirmed he has held talks with Everton over a possible return to Goodison Park in January.

The 20-year-old Nigerian striker joined Everton for £7m from KAS Eupen in the summer but was immediately loaned out to Anderlecht as he didn’t qualify for a UK work permit.

Onyekuru has been in fine form for the Belgian side so far this season, scoring six goals in nine league games.

With Everton lacking goals there has been talk of the Toffees bringing Onyekuru back to Goodison early when the transfer window re-opens.

In order to do so though Everton would have to use the “exceptional talent” argument to try and convince the authorities to grant Onyekuru a work permit.

Whether Everton would be successful in that appeal remains uncertain, but Onyekuru has at least confirmed talks have taken place.

Speaking to Belgian newspaper La Libre, Onyekuru said:

“Yes, that's right [had a meeting in Liverpool] and I'm waiting for something. That's all I can say.

"I hope to be able to play there in January. Everton is happy with my start to the season. But we are not in January and all my concentration is in Anderlecht."
