Another new name has declared his interest in the Everton job

Former Everton captain Phil Neville has declared his interest in the vacant manager’s position at Goodison Park, according to BBC Sport.

The Toffees sacked Ronald Koeman on Monday and a wide variety of names have already been linked with the job.

Ryan Giggs publicly declared his interest in the role and he has now been joined by his former Man Utd teammate Neville.

Neville made more than 300 appearances for the Toffees in an eight-year spell at Goodison between 2005 and 2013.

After retiring from football in 2013 the former England defender returned to Man Utd as assistant coach during David Moyes’ ill-fated tenure at Old Trafford.

Neville also had a short spell as assistant coach at Valencia before leaving the club last year.

Since then the 40-year-old has been a regular TV pundit but has expressed his desire to move into management.

I admire his optimism in voicing his desire to take the Everton job but it seems like a very optimistic shout.

Giving the top job to a rookie with no managerial experience (bar one game in charge of non-league Salford City, a club he owns along with the rest of the “Class of ‘92”) would be a huge risk and one Everton are unlikely to take.

The only inexperienced boss likely to be in contention is U23s manager David Unsworth, who has been placed in temporary charge ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup trip to Chelsea.
