Everton fined by UEFA for incident against Lyon

Everton’s week is simply not getting any better. Minutes after the FA upheld the two-match ban for striker Oumar Niasse for simulation, the UEFA announced that the club would be fined €30,000 (£26,650) for the melee that ensued at Goodison Park during the game against Lyon in the Europa League.

The charge against the Toffees is for "aggressions by supporters against players", related to the incident when the French team’s goalkeeper Anthony Lopes appeared to have been struck by a fan holding an infant.

The incident kicked off when defender Ashley Williams charged into Lopes, with a brawl ensuing involving players and staff from both teams. The melee then moved towards the sideline at the Howard Kendall Gwladys Street End where the fan looked like he was pushing the Lyon player back towards the field of play.

However, additional footage then showed the fan attempting to hit out at Lopes after that, leading to an investigation started by Merseyside Police. A 30-year-old man was spoken to under suspicion of assault before he was released under investigation. Everton have already taken action against the fan, suspending him for life from Goodison Park.

The Blues play their fifth game of the group stages tomorrow at home against Atalanta, with the side already knocked out of the competition after picking up just one point in four games. The last game will be away at Apollon Limassol.
