Manchester City 1-1 Everton: Rooney nets 200th career Premier League goal

And...exhale. If you’d told Evertonians before the match that they’d escape the Etihad with a point, just about everyone would have taken it.

However, after Wayne Rooney finished a lovely team move early in the match, and with Kyle Walker being sent off before halftime, the Blues really should have gone home with a win.

Rooney’s goal was his 200th in his Premier League career, and assisted again by Dominic Calvert-Lewin. John Stones played DCL onside, in addition to not marking Rooney in the center of the area. Mason Holgate played Calvert-Lewin in, and from there it was a simple cross to Rooney. The ball deflected off Ederson and into the net, but the Brazilian goalkeeper shouldn’t be faulted - his sight was blocked and Rooney got a little power behind the shot.

Kyle Walker received two yellow cards just before halftime, the first from a late challenge on Leighton Baines, and the second for intentionally elbowing Calvert-Lewin during an aerial battle.

Despite being up a man for the entire second half, Everton faced wave after wave of City attacking moves. The Toffees were never able to get a foothold in terms of possession, with David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne running the show in midfield.

Ronald Koeman looked to stabilize things by bringing on Gylfi Sigurdsson and Davy Klaassen, but Raheem Sterling finally broke through after Holgate headed a clearance directly onto his boot. Jordan Pickford stood no chance of stopping the lashed volley.

An entertaining and competitive match was marred at the end by the sending off of Morgan Schneiderlin. The Frenchman received a justified yellow card in the first half, but late on made a clean tackle on Sergio Aguero. “Kun” took a dive straight out of the Summer Olympics, and Bobby Madley pulled out a second yellow for Schneiderlin.

In truth, a point at the Etihad is a good result. The Blues are ahead of schedule so far this season, having only conceded once in a run of four wins and one draw. Koeman will be disappointed in Schneiderlin’s red card, but Sigurdsson was able to debut and Wayne Rooney continued his fine form. On to Croatia, then.
