Wow, one bad game in six or so the past few months and the usual suspects are back on the lad's case.

Roberto Carlos would look sh*te playing in that defence.

It's more of a case of him having two good preseason games in two years and some people believe he has turned the corner.
Do remember that before those  two good games, he looked sh*t against Hertha Berlin.

I'm not sure a couple of solid outings in some meaningless pre-season games really matters. He's not the answer at left back. You have a point about defenders all looking poor in our side, they all seem too. But Moreno is the worst of them and his next brain fart is just around the corner. There was a moment tonight where he was tracking one of their players back towards the edge of our box, it was a ball over the top, he had the opportunity to challenge for it as it came down but he just let it drop straight into the path of their player who would have been in on goal had he not mis controlled it. That was fairly typical of Moreno, the lad doesn't have the defensive instincts or the intelligence to be relied upon. There was another moment in the last 8-10 minutes of the game where Mane was breaking with the ball, Moreno sprinted the full length of the pitch for the overlap, Mane gave him the ball, there wasn't anything on (he struggles when all the angles are cut off, particularly being so one footed) so he gave Mane a proper hospital pass, we lost possession and then they were free to gallop 50 yards untouched to our penalty area. Again, this is classic Moreno, zero appreciation for any sort of game management, he shouldn't be running the length of the pitch chasing the game when we're 2-0 up but he has done that regularly and left us wide open late in games. He gives me heart attacks.

Looked good in preseason and I had hope but he reminded me in these last 2 games, how much of a liability he is. Can't believe we didn't take that offer that came in for him. Dumb cu*ts.

      Or system?

Not sure VVD coming sorts it out to be honest.

He will improve it as he is better than Lovren but he will get exposed if the guys in other positions don't improve in this system get replaced.

It's a collective thing when you analyse  the way we play.

Agreed Dave and there's no doubt Alberto suffers because of midfield. We don't have a player like Lucas who will bail the wing-backs out, who knows how to position to protect and recycle. However as much as Moreno is exposed he doesn't cover himself in glory when he is in those isolated positions, not 2v1 as nobody can be expected to deal with that, but just 1v1. Even in the first few minutes he got skinned by the simplest of cuts inside, lad feints to cross and Moreno is nearly sitting in the stands admiring him as he trots past at half pace.

So as much as it's a collective thing, you can most certainly identify individual weaknesses, as you rightly point out in Lovren also. Collectively and individually our team is not good enough at defending on our left hand side. Gini/Hendo/Lovren/Moreno, all 4 of them failed pitifully tonight and against Watford and it's a change in personnel rather than system that will bring about the biggest improvement, I agree it wont fix all the problems but it will eliminate many of the self-inflicted. In Gini and Hendo's case they just don't understand how to stem a leak, they don't see the problem developing early enough and by the time they react the move is beyond them. That is actually more at Hendo because Gini just lumbers around at half pace finding space (yes he said he found loads of space tonight), the reason you're in space Gini is because you're in the bloody wrong space. Standing 40 yards out while they've got us hemmed in is not finding good space, it's being a lazy sh*te!

I reckon we keep the lad and use him if Mane or Salah are injured. He's probably just as fast as either of them and could really exploit a tiring defence late on in a match.

Don't think he should be near our back 4.

I  think he thinks the same thing which is why he's never anywhere near it and plays most of the game like a Yorkshire terrier chasing a bubble

Honestly, rarely did I see our midfield get overrun by the opposition and our defensive crumble when under pressure when Lucas was playing, not saying Lucas is a world class/exceptional midfielder, but because of his tactical intelligence which allows him to command and navigate our midfielders (Remember Carra doing a piece on Lucas on MNF on his intelligence?).

I don't think Henderson has the tactical knowledge of a natural #6, and because of this, I feel he struggles to take control of the other midfielders like how a proper #6 does when we are under pressure. I am not saying Henderson is sh*t, and it certainly isn't all his fault, but he just isn't a #6. I think he is far superior as a #8, and after the 13/14 season, I thought he could reach exceptional levels playing as the box-boxer, but not as a #6.

I just think it's time we look into a proper specialist  which as Amercian Red mentioned, would most likely solve 60-75% of our defensive problems which would most likely make Moreno and Lovren look decent!

I've thought about this too mate but I'm not sure he's good enough on the ball and his delivery leaves something to be desired.....he's all about the pace, the pace.....

I'm just remembering a moment in pre-season......can't remember the game (might've been Bayern).

We were exposed at the back and out of nowhere Bertie comes skidding / sliding in to make an interception......

Trouble is from when he through himself in to reaching the play Bayern have advanced. The bold Bertie goes flying across the field about 5 yards away from the ball/attacker and missing play completely.....literally from one corner of the TV screen to the other in the pub we were watching it in in Tenerife.

One of the funniest things I've seen in a while - it was utterly hilarious.

To BBB's point - that is Father Dougal right there.

Hope to god somebody else picked up on it and not just me 'n' my boys 😂

He done an interview for Sky Sports and he can't even speak English yet. In his 3rd season now and still not learnt the language. No wonder he seems so dumb on the pitch, probably has no idea what he's even been told to do before the game.

This guy is simply not good enough, he dives into challenges, hates staying on his feet and his tackles, positioning and defending is simply sub standard.

The only plus is that he has loads of energy.
