      Terry Venables?!  :f_tongueincheek:

In all seriousness - I can't deny Bobby Robson's knighthood. Great player in the post war era and an excellent manager. And a fine example of a gentleman. Much missed. Coleman doesn't hold a candle to Robson.

      Haha completely forgot Euro 96!
Yes, I know Robson was much more than just that semifinal - still I find it quite funny how warmly people refer to that World Cup here.
I'm used to the idea that losing on a semifinal is a terrible faillure

Is it right that because Woodburn didn't get any game time on the field against Ireland, he is still not locked into Wales?

Had been looking for his thread .
Under the formal name of Benjamin.

Surprised no posts since May .

Thought he did very well  in the Palace game.  Got himself into some good positions.
Passing and movement were impressive .
Definetely a lad to keep on the books .

Absolutely, him and TAA both look like they have the potential to make it as first team players to me. Some of Ben's passing was sublime, has a lovely touch and isn't intimidated having to hold onto possession in a tight space. As Jürgen has said, his position is clearly not set in stone because he has so many natural abilities and talent.

I was well impressed with him, again.

Often wondered what position Woodburn will settle in given that he's played a number of different positions since making his debut last year. This pre season looks a bit clearer - he'll surely settle on the number 10 role? Agree with Skip above - thought his passing on the ground and through passes were excellent yesterday.

Like TAA it's heartening to see him come through and immediately look somewhat composed and comfortable. Judging by those two our Academy certainly seems to be doing a good job of producing not only technical proficient footballers, but also players who have a brain for the game.

One pass through to Salah in particular was very very good. He does need to work on his distribution in terms of decision making and execution if he is to play deeper in the midfield 3 as he did against Palace. There was a couple of moments early on where he tried playing out and had passes intercepted, one in particular gave the ball away inside our own half with our defence exposed. Still, very promising and just like TAA their adaptability is very encouraging and IMO a sign of the good work being done by the Academy staff on producing clever, talented footballers.

I think the great thing with him is his versatility.

      CM -------- CM
      Ben

      DM
      CM ------- Ben

      RW -------- Ben
      ST

Personally I'd like to see him playing more central as he's really good on the ball and that's where he'd get it the most but at this point I don't think it matters as long as he gets game time every so often.

Do you not think he needs a bit more pace to be played on the wing? Like you his skills on the ball are excellent and in the middle is where I think he'd be most suited.

First off, thanks for that compliment :D.

I think it'll depend on what Klopp wants out of him on that side. If he wants somebody with pace then maybe Woodburn isn't quite suited there full time.

One thing I will say about him, I've been far more impressed with him in the middle for the first team than when he's out wide.

A fine young footballer who, along with Solanke, is one of the first for a long time, that I feel just might make it big. Fingers crossed.

      Great article.
      He comes across extremely well
Love the fact that he isn't nervous of being around the first team and is in no rush to know his best position and just wants to play and learn.
Also highlighted the influence that Lucas has had with yet another young or new player to our club.

Hope he changes his mind and plays for England. He is still uncapped by Welsh senior side. He never got off the sub bench in the qualifier.

He was born in England, not sure where he lived all his life but both his parents are English. Wales have a lot less chance of success at future major competitions. England have a golden generation on its way from the look of the recent youth tournaments. Wales have half a good team at the moment. Good luck to him but he will regret it if we win something which could happen next decade, when he will be at his peak. Sure Solanke, Ojo, Ejaria... 3 of our players who just won the England u20 World Cup will make in impact internationally. Maybe he will be the next Bale, who was the last Giggs. It is like Suarez playing for Derby County. Good luck to him.
My grandfather is Irish and if I were a player with as much potential as Woodburn I would not be playing for Ireland. I would only play for Ireland if England told me I am not good enough and no international future playing for England. Each to their own, but I think at 17 it is not an age to make this decision. Personally I don't think he is ready for international football or to make that choice.

      Things he is not legally old enough to do;

      Drink a beer
      Get a tattoo
      Vote
      Have a mortgage
      Buy solvents
      Gamble
      And more...

But he is allowed to rule out playing for England.

Think he's pretty much nailed his colours to the Welsh flag, the way Bale's been talking about him.

What's that? The 4th golden generation in the last 20 years or so isn't it? Yeah...cause the other generations did just brilliantly didn't they. St George's Park is Jurassic Park - full of coaching dinosaurs which should have been extinct long ago. F**k the England national team and most importantly F**k THE FA.
