      Disagree wholeheartedly mate.

Yes he can and will improve. But I had him in top couple left backs in the league the last 2 seasons.

Time will tell but he's 100% a signing that reeks of ambition for me. At least on the part of the boss.

Will prove a better player than Walker or Keane by comparison.

No problems with that mate, but it reeks of a gamble to me because he will have to improve to cut it. He is a player I liked the look of when he first started out for Hull as a teenager, but one who actually thought would progress beyond what he has achieved so far.

City's signing reeks of ambition. This is a bit of a gamble (on the field at least) because we are hoping his potential is realised.

He's a fair enough signing provided more is to come. He alone is not the solution to our leaky defence. A class CB to compliment Matip and a highly mobile centre mid will see us right.

Fair do's fella - I get not it's wrapped up in everything else going on and agree re quality CB.

If you pardon the pun though I think you "pays your money and takes your choice" re where the gamble is.....

I think the money paid for a very ordinary footballer (though a fine athlete) in Walker - to my eyes at least - is a bigger gamble.

You don't think Lovren and Matip could handle it for a couple of weeks?

They are more than capable but VVD is better than Lovren.

I'm not. You did to try to make a point - which I happen to disagree with......as per previous "wholeheartedly" ;)

8 premier league clubs were in for him fella......and 2 from clubs in leading European leagues.......that's been widely reported.

I get bored with the scepticism because he isn't English or coming from a major club. I fervently believe there should be a place for grabbing the best kids coming through......which we have.

Either way I'm sure we'll both be happier if I prove to be right :)

Not gonna try to argue with you because I want the lad to do well for us now that he has signed.
I just find your definition of "ambition" a bit odd, especially for a club like ours.

Never said he wasn't or that he wasn't an upgrade to Lovren the question was can he handle the qualifiers if VVD doesn't come until the end of the window.

Think your being a tad harsh on Dejan mate, there is no doubt VVD is superior to Lovren but Lovren has done ok for us to be fair, ok, he's subject to a brain fart or two but tell me who hasn't, i'm all for a Matip/VVD partnership of course, but like all other positions we need two capable of performing at the level we will be playing at, i would doubt that even the best of the best won't err when under severe pressure,

we're going to be playing many more games than we did last season, so we're going to be needing players like Lovren to come in to cover without too much disruption, also, this is healthy competition for the squad, knowing one F**k up could mean a spell plucking splinters from their arse cheeks, bearing this in mind will have the players playing at their optimum, and running thru those proverbial brick walls.

I am in total agreement and that was my argument yesterday that some posters indicated not having VVD now will spell disaster in the qualifier to which my response was that I am sure the gaffer trusts the fellas that got them to the qualifier in the first place.

I get that fella and I was a few beers in at the time to be fair so perhaps a wee bit more feisty than I intended.

What I meant by ambition is that waiting 12 months to get the player you want rather than accept a sub standard replacement for whatever spend......bear in mind Jürgen himself has said he could've spent last year.....is ambitious in coaching terms.

Southampton determined to keep Virgil van Dijk and plan to reintegrate him in squad

      Jeremy Wilson, Deputy Football Correspondent

      28 July 2017 • 4:31pm

Southampton hope to reintegrate Virgil van Dijk into first-team training next week, with new manager Mauricio Pellegrino preparing to again tell his captain that he will not be sold this summer.

Van Dijk has been left to train back at the club’s New Forest base while the rest of the squad continue their preparation in France after he was judged not to be in the right of frame of mind but it is understood that the 26-year-old has worked diligently this week on his fitness.

Southampton’s new board of directors remain adamant that this will be the first summer since the departure of former chairman Nicola Cortese in 2014 in which they will not make major sales. That stance extends to Ryan Bertrand – who has been of interest to Manchester City – as well as Van Dijk.

The Van Dijk situation blew up early in the transfer window when a series of stories emerged in which it was reported that Van Dijk wanted to join Liverpool due to their manager Jürgen Klopp. That led to a complaint by Southampton over suspicions of direct contact between Van Dijk and Klopp – which would be against Premier League rules – and then an apology from Liverpool and promise that they would not pursue the transfer.

Southampton remain confident that Van Dijk will accept the situation, not least because any future chance of a move to a club in the Champions League would hardly be helped by a loss of form or any question-marks about his commitment. Van Dijk, whose contract does not expire until 2022, has not played since January following an ankle injury and it was Pellegrino who decided that he should stay outside the group until he was fully committed psychologically. Southampton play St Etienne on Saturday in France before final warm-up fixtures at St Mary’s over the next week against Augsburg and Sevilla.

As well as keeping Van Dijk and Bertrand, Southampton are looking to make one or two additions and there has been interest in Tottenham’s Kevin Wimmer.

Looking like both deals are dead in the water, I hope we have alternatives lined up, but I won't be holding my breath! I think our transfer committee needs a new name, anyone got any ideas!
