For me, Coutinho won't start and will make the bench, only coming on if we're behind in the last 20-25 mins if we're losing.  Think the line up will be: -

                       Mignolet
       Gomez  Matip   Lovren  Robertson
                      Gini Henderson Emre
                   Salah  Firmino  Mane

Think there'll be less goals than most think a la last season. 2-1 win be nice but suspect it'll finish 1 all which'll be a decent result.

I get where you're coming from mate and can see it from both sides. This is why I was saying I think it's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Those who think he should be left out, it would be interesting to see if they'd happily pay the price of 3 points to City to make that choice, that could be the case. I know for sure Jürgen wont become a doormat but I also see this massively different from the Sakho incidents so getting an angry Coutinho who is ready to prove a point, assuming Jürgen can work the motivation that way, could easily prove to be the difference maker.

Tough call, not sure even after the game if we'll know if the right one was made regardless of result.

Phill going straight back in could be construed as favouritism on Klopp's behalf, also disrespectful to the dressing room who have worked hard to earn a first X1 berth,

After his antics I doubt Jürgen will slot him in , he's certainly not in the Mama bracket but he has pissed off the boss so won't be forgiven that easily,
It would also be harsh on whoever would miss out after playing so well recently,

Coutinho will have to bide his time and work extra hard to win back his shoe in start.

I think we'll win this one comfortably for some reason.

The bookies don't though, some value to be had on a reds win. 3/1 seems a bit harsh really.

Should be closer to evens in my opinion.

      Same as against Arsenal.
Sit a bit deeper, let them have the ball in their own half, attack the midfield around halfway, get in behind the full backs.

Looks like you were right mate. Bold decision by the boss that, I hope it pays off for him. Left out of the squad completely removes that temptation if we are behind to throw him on against your better judgement.

I think he's made the 'right' choice, certainly in terms of squad harmony, fingers crossed we get the 3 points then this wont be an issue.

Like I said yesterday - entirely agree.  Squad did an outstanding job v Arsenal and deserve another go at it.  Must be heading towards 6 months since we last lost a game so I am braced for one at some point soon.

I also think this is the right decision.  Everyone knows Phil's been fit enough to play the last few weeks -- he trained and played a couple of cameos for Brazil during the international break -- but he can't be allowed to walk straight back into the 11 after trying to engineer a move away.  This "we are monitoring his back injury and getting him match fit" excuse allows Klopp to say 1 thing to the media, while sending another message to Coutinho and the team.  I think Klopp will be telling Phil that he needs to get his head down, work his socks off in training, and earn his place back.  No one plays based on reputation -- you have to earn your spot with commitment, hard work, and dedication on the training pitch.  Then  perform well in games to keep your place.

Interesting one this.  If we can beat City without Coutinho, and play like we did against Arsenal, I don't see Phil getting back in barring injuries.  The midfield looks better balanced, the left side has better cover and the attack has more pace and penetration with the lads who played our recent matches.  That's what I think, anyhow.  And I can see us winning this.  Can't see us losing, anyway.

Mignolet back in (always does better after a 'rest')
Trent    Matip   Lovren    Robertson (positional sense will be vital and he can cross)
                                Henderson
                            Gini           Can
                         Salah  Firmino  Mane

I'm not convinced by the 'Gini can't play away from home' argument.  He just can't seem to score.
His contribution is very easy to overlook in the tension of the game.

I'd have played Coutinho myself, but I 100% understand the boss's decision not to do it. If we don't get the result we're after, only a fool would say "he should have played Coutinho", considering he hasn't kicked a ball in anger for us since the season started.

FWIW I think it's a really tough game and I'd take a point all day long.

So with Phil definitely not included, I guess the two quesitons on here are the fullback positions, TAA or Joe, Andy or Alby. I guess Phil not being in would open a slot on the bench for either Solanke or Woodburn (along with Sturridge, Milner, Ox, Klavan and Gomez or TAA.

Klopp was pretty clear in his presser he plans to use a lot of players over this 7 match in 23-day stretch. I think we're even going to see Karius in goal, maybe as early as this week vs. Seville. Let's see how deep the squad truly is.

                         Mignolet
      Trent-A - Matip - Lovren - Moreno
                       Henderson
               Can                 Wijnaldum
      Salah          Firmino            Mane

Doubt he'll drop Moreno, he has been playing well lately and I'd rather have Moreno deal with Walker / their right winger than Robertson at the moment. Same on the right, Trent over Gomez. Gomez has been decent on the right, but he gets beaten way too easily sometimes and he just seems to be less mobile than Trent.

Wijnaldum also always starts for me here. He's brilliant in these high tempo transition games, probably our best midfielder at that and his performances in the big away games last season were very important too.

Really looking forward to this game, last season's games were absolute crackers, very high tempo, intense games, perfect for our lads and I can see us win this one. Haven't got a clue how City are going to line up. Kompany is supposed to be out for this one, so they probably won't be playing three at the back or Pep has to play Fernandinho in their back three and get Yaya Toure on the pitch again. Sterling is suspensed, so not sure who's going to play on the wings. Guardialo might start with Jesus and Sane there with Aguero as their striker.

Thought he might bring Cou and at least have him as an option. Not start, just use if needed.
Can't 'really' be fitness, tidy finish for Brazil, thought he could do a job for 15 mins for us as a sub, depending on how things going.
Can understand Klopp sticking by the lads who've done well so far, though we do need to induct Cou back in at some stage.
I deffo don't think he shouldn't walk back into the 1st XI, but leaving him out altogether was a surprise.
It's a balancing act, sure - but a situation Cou caused, so regardless of result, Jürgen is doing what he thinks is best for the squad and won't get any criticism from me for dropping him if we loose.

By the way, it's probably next weekend vs. Burnley when Klopp freshens up the squad. He could certainly name the same 11 at Seville midweek (hearing again the idea of Karius playing in the Euro matches so maybe with that exception). Burnley then would be the opportunity to rest some players and give Sturridge, Solanke, and others a chance against a team that will definitely sit deep.

I'd take that. Don't think our record against them has been bad at all under Klopp. Think we've beaten them virtually every time haven't we? But, we go into this game knowing we are more than capable of getting the win, especially the way they were so nearly held by Bournemouth!

No Kompany for them, surely Stones and their defence wont be able to handle our front 3...

      TAA and Robertson. IMO.

      4-1 win.

Firmino double, and goals to Emre and Mane.

      Done.
