Arsene Wenger tore into his players for making “massive mistakes” as Arsenal suffered a devastating defeat to leave their top four hopes in tatters.

Wenger was furious as he gave Nacho Monreal a rollicking during the game and then watched keeper Petr Cech drop a clanger with a horrendous mis-kick to gift Swansea their all-important second goal.

Gunners boss Wenger said: “We made unusual and massive mistakes that was the killer. Unfortunately I believe we were not good enough, I believe we were not disciplined enough.

“Overall we were not convincing defensively and not convincing offensively and in the end we lose the game. Maybe it highlights the whole lack of quality of concentration that we didn’t have tonight.

“I was angry (with Monreal) because there was no need to let the ball go out in the throw in. We had the ball and we could play straight away.

“In the decisive moment we have been beaten. Especially in the first and second goals. The third goal you cannot say it was absolutely unstoppable. At our level you need to win decisive fights.”

Wenger brought on Olivier Giroud as a late substitute even though the Arsenal striker is set to join Chelsea as part of a transfer merry-go-round which will see Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang go to the Emirates.

The Frenchman paid a glowing tribute to Giroud and said it was a tribute to his professionalism that he could play despite knowing he may leave. Giroud went over to the away end at the end to say what looked like a goodbye.

Wenger said: “It’s a tribute to Olivier yes because he is a guy who gave great service to the club, never let us down on the commitment front and saved us many times. I have absolutely no doubt, when I ask him if he is ready to commit and he says yes.

“I have no problem with that and put him on because it was needed. Unfortunately he couldn’t help us. It was a difficult situation for him but he always had his heart 100 per cent in the team and was committed.

“He’s an Arsenal man, after that he needs to play as well because he has not played many games in the Premier League since the start of the season. He’s a regular player in the French national team. He has a World Cup where France will go, places of course are difficult to get.”

Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal, who has led his side out of the drop zone, made another colourful analogy after his side’s latest win.

Carvalhal said: “[Before] we were in hospital receiving visits, [now] we are near to go out of the hospital. We are not far away that the doctor says to us maybe you can go home.”
