Mirror Sport can reveal the prize money clubs can pocket from participating in the Carabao Cup.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Bristol City all still remain in the competition with The Robins taking on the Premier League leaders at Ashton Gate on Tuesday in a second leg.

The Gunners host the Blues on Wednesday with their tie currently 0-0.

All four teams will pocket money for reaching the semi-final stage of the competition, but those that have been knocked out in the rounds prior won't.

Here's how it works...

An EFL spokesperson informed Mirror Sport that there is zero prize money up until the semi-final stage of the competition.

The two teams that exit the competition in the semis will receive £25,000.

As for the finalists, £50,000 goes to the runner up while the winner pockets £100,000.

While this initially may not seem a lot, these figures don't include the money generated from gate receipts.

Unlike league matches, the total sum earned at a Carabao Cup match via gate receipts is split 45 per cent each way, regardless of where the game is played.

So when Burton lost out to Manchester United in the third round of this year's competition they still walked away with £500,000.

The money generated via gate receipts for the semi finals from last season's EFL Cup was £3million.

And in the final at Wembley £2m was made from gate receipts, meaning each club walked away a cool million.

The large sums of money not only show the value of a team going further in the competition but also the incentive of a lower league club earning a tie against a side in the top tier.
