Everton midfielder James McCarthy suffered an horrendous broken leg in his side's Premier League clash with West Brom - in an incident which left Baggies forward Salomon Rondon in tears.

Rondon accidentally struck McCarthy's leg as both challenged for the ball in the second half of the match at Goodison Park, with the Irishman left writhing in agony on the turf.

The Venezuelan was left distraught when he saw the nature of the injury, and he had to be consoled by teammates including substitute James McClean - an Ireland international teammate of McCarthy's.

Another Irishman, Everton's Seamus Coleman - who suffered his own awful broken leg when playing for his country against Wales in a World Cup qualifier in March last year - was seen heading down from the stands in order to check on McCarthy's condition.

McCarthy was replaced by Wayne Rooney in the 61st minute of the match.

West Brom were leading 1-0 at the time through Jay Rodriguez's early strike, with substitute Oumar Niasse equalising for the hosts as the match ended 1-1.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce confirmed afterwards that McCarthy suffered a double leg fracture, saying: “It’s a tibia and fibula, and compounded too, so it is awful for James.

"He wont be available until next season, a huge blow for him.

“He's suffered with injury this season, what we call niggly injuries, and we felt we'd got over those, he was getting fitter and his game was beginning to come back and bang, this happens. It's a long period of time for him to recover from this, unfortunately.”

After the match, Everton tweeted "All our thoughts are with James McCarthy this evening after it was confirmed he has suffered a double leg fracture."

West Brom midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak - who played in the match - tweeted a message of support for McCarthy, writing: "I hope it won’t be as serious as it looks James, get well soon, rest is only football."

The club's official Twitter account also wished the midfielder well.

McCarthy's teammate Coleman has still to play since his broken leg last year, although he has recently returned to training with the Blues.
