Transfer deadline day was always going to centre on the domino effect triggered by three forwards.

Borussia Dortmund wanted to take Michy Batshuayi on loan from Chelsea, because they were losing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal, who in turn had to fill Chelsea's striking gap by selling them Olivier Giroud .

And in the end all three moves happened, with all three clubs understandably delighted with their new forwards.

But that doesn't mean there's no room for emotion.

And given that Giroud was bringing a five-and-a-half year spell with Arsenal to an end, with the Frenchman having scored 105 goals in 253 games for the Gunners, winning three FA Cups, there was understandably a bit of something in the air.

After the move was confirmed, Giroud tweeted: "I spent five and a half amazing years within the arsenal family. This beautiful story ends today. Thank you for your warm welcome. I would like to especially thank the fans for their unconditional support upon my arrival."

And Gunners fans - as well as the club themselves - were quick to pay tribute to a loyal servant.

In another tweet, Arsenal paid further tribute to Giroud, writing: "For the scorpion kicks, the bullet headers, the late strikes, the north London derby winner, the FA Cup final assists, the 105 goals, the 253 appearances and for all the hard work and dedication, we want to say… THANK YOU, OLIVIER GIROUD."
