Tottenham Hotspur have a big opportunity at hand to improve their Premier League positioning this weekend, but Liverpool want to ride a wave of much-needed momentum to help pull them from their mediocre start in the league.
Thanks to Manchester United losing their match on Saturday in shocking fashion, Tottenham can, with a win over Liverpool, go even on points with the Red Devils, trailing them in the standings only on goal differential. That would also keep Spurs at five points behind Manchester City, potentially within striking distance should the league leaders’ form slip a bit.
But Liverpool are eager to improve their own standing in the table, after an inconsistent opening eight games of the season has them in eighth place in the EPL. They’re just four points behind third-place Tottenham, though, and a win over Spurs can see them close that gap significantly -- and they’ve definitely got some excitement and momentum in the squad after their 7-0 thrashing of Maribor at midweek. Liverpool’s overall form hasn’t been convincing of late, but they certainly have the ability to beat Tottenham at Wembley — just as long as their squad gets and stays on the same page, which has been an issue for Jurgen Klopp’s side at times this season.
Tottenham Hotspur are looking a little thin in midfield right now, with Victor Wanyama, Mousa Dembele, and Erik Lamela all out. Liverpool have a few key injuries of their own to deal with — Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana are still out of their attack, and right Nathaniel Clyne remains on the sidelines as well.
