Two weeks ago, Chelsea and AS Roma put on one of the most dramatic matches of the Champions League so far this season, with the Italians putting on a dramatic comeback to take a late lead in London, only for Chelsea to find an equalizer just a few minutes later. This time around, Roma are playing at home in the Stadio Olimpico, and they’re hopeful that will help make the difference to put them over Chelsea both in this match and in the group standings.
Roma came back in roaring fashion two weeks ago, overcoming an early 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the 70th minute of the match at Stamford Bridge. Eden Hazard struck back for Chelsea in the 75th to equalize the match, but Roma looked like the more likely side to find a fourth goal — it just never came. Roma’s attack has been a little blunted since then, scoring just one goal in each of their three wins since that chaotic day, but they’re still rising in confidence and feel capable of taking down Chelsea.
Of course, Antonio Conte will feel like his Chelsea side got one-upped in that encounter, and he’s not one to put up with being showed up twice by the same opponent in rapid succession. He’s going to do everything he can to make life difficult for Eusebio Di Francesco and Roma in this match, and Chelsea are going to come in looking to fight and grind out a win any way they need to. This might not be a pretty match, but with Conte and Chelsea holding on to a narrow two-point lead in the standings over Roma, they don’t need it to be pretty — they just need it to end in a win.
