The last time Manchester United and Benfica faced off, few fans enjoyed what they watched. Manchester were playing extremely conservative, flat football designed to not lose, and Benfica were too timid to push the issue. The Red Devils only won on something of a fluke goal, with the keeper accidentally carrying the ball over his line on a free kick, and fans will be hoping for better this time around.
Manchester United’s form has been very inconsistent of late, winning two of their three matches since that meeting two weeks ago, but losing 2-1 in shocking fashion to Huddersfield Town and not really impressing in either of their other matches. They need to start showing much better performances if they’re going to make the competitive pushes they want this season, and they need to start doing it soon.
Benfica, meanwhile, have won twice since that brutal loss, though they’re still well out of their cherished spot atop the Primeira Liga table. A result of some sort here at the hallowed grounds of Old Trafford could be the spark they need to start a run of great form, though even a win might be too little, too late for their Champions League hopes given that they’ve won zero points through their first three group stage matches.
