One of the most-anticipated matchups of the Champions League group stage is here, with English high-fliers Tottenham Hotspur hosting the lightning-quick attack of German side Borussia Dortmund. This is a match that fans all around the world and of many other teams circled as soon as it was scheduled, because both teams rank among the most fun to watch in Europe.
Of course, that was also the case when the two teams were drawn against each other two seasons ago in the Europa League knockout rounds, but a Premier League-focused Spurs side put out a rotated side in both legs of the tie and the whole thing became something of a dud, with BVB romping to a 5-1 aggregate win in the only competitive tie the clubs have faced each other in.
Of course, many of the Spurs players still in the team after that tie would love to settle the score, and with both clubs looking stronger than they were in that clash, that hunger and quality should make for a fantastic match. Adding to the spice is that they’re in the same group as Real Madrid, meaning that whoever loses this match will start the group off in a bit of a lurch, joining Cyprus minnows APOEL Nicosa at the bottom of the standings and staring upwards at two high-quality teams.
Both clubs have a number of injury concerns to worry about, with Tottenham Hotspur missing creative midfielder Dele Alli via suspension thanks to a straight red card in their final Europa League match last season, plus the injuries to Erik Lamela, Victor Wanyama, Danny Rose, and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou.
The absences of Alli and Wanyama will be very troublesome for Spurs’ midfield, but they’ll be hoping to take advantage of a Borussia Dortmund defense left thin and shaky thanks to injuries to Marc Bartra, Erik Durm, Marcel Schmelzer, and Neven Subotic. Midfield maestro Julian Weigl is hurt as well, as are Sebastian Rode, Raphael Guerreiro, and Andre Schurrle, leaving Dortmund walking a bit wounded and not playing with their best team on the pitch.
