Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future at Arsenal remains in doubt following the latest talks between the player’s representatives and club officials.
The 24-year-old is of interest to Chelsea and Liverpool and has less than a year left on his contract.
Oxlade-Chamberlain held talks with manager Arsene Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis on Thursday. It is understood Arsenal made an improved offer – but worth less than the £180,000-a-week which has been suggested – but there was, at least initially, no indication the midfielder would sign an extension.
As reported by Standard Sport on August 14, Chelsea are increasingly confident they can pull off a deal in the region of £35million to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain although they face competition from Liverpool and both clubs have to overcome Wenger’s reluctance to sell the player this month.
Wenger spoke on Thursday of the “responsibility for the future of the club” Oxlade-Chamberlain has and reiterated his belief he will become “one of the big English players in the coming years”.
However, Oxlade-Chamberlain became frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities last season and is yet to be convinced of his long-term role in Wenger’s plans.
