Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain set for Liverpool as Arsenal accept £40m deal

Arsenal have agreed a £40million deal to sell Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool.

Standard Sport reported this morning that the two clubs were continuing negotiations after the Gunners rejected an opening offer, believed to be just over £30m.

The 24-year-old will now undergo a medical before signing a five-year deal worth £120,000-a-week.

Arsenal had already accepted a £40m bid from Chelsea but once Oxlade-Chamberlain made it clear he preferred a move to Anfield, the major sticking point became whether Liverpool would match that valuation.

The Gunners were prepared to make Oxlade-Chamberlain honour the final year of his contract but that eventuality was avoided as Liverpool upped their offer to an acceptable level.

The 24-year-old is thought to have snubbed Chelsea due to a reluctance to play as a wing-back in Antonio Conte's 3-4-3 system.

He has made no secret of his desire to play in central midfield and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes he can be a success in that position.

The deal brings to an end a long-running saga in which Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was initially adamant Oxlade-Chamberlain would not be sold.

However, the England international rejected Arsenal's latest contact offer- believed to be worth £150,00-a-week - and Wenger eventually sanctioned a reluctant sale to Liverpool.
