Alvaro Arbeloa has taken a swipe at Slaven Bilic after West Ham sacked the manager on Monday.

The Hammers was relieved of his duties this morning after speaking with co-owner David Sullivan, with former Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland manager David Moyes set to replace him on a short-term deal.

Standard Sport understands Bilic still had the backing of the players but Arbeloa was cutting in his remarks when commenting on the situation on Twitter.

"Better late than never," Arbeloa wrote when quote-tweeting the confirmation of Bilic's sacking.

Arbeloa spent one season under Bilic at West Ham, joining on a free transfer after leaving Real Madrid 2016, but made just four competitive appearances before announcing his retirement from player the following June.

The 34-year-old confirmed in the days after his retirement that his spell at West Ham convinced him to hang up his boots, telling Marca: "Things this season did not come out as I had dreamed.

He added: "It has been complicated. It’s something that when it comes to my mind I try not to think much about. At a professional level it has not been an easy year and that also has a personal impact, of course."
