Arsene Wenger: My future will be decided with Arsenal board at the end of the season

Arsene Wenger has reaffirmed that his Arsenal future will be up for discussion with the board at the end of the season.

Wenger signed a new two-year contract at the end of last season and has consistently avowed his belief in the importance of seeing out his deals.

At the time he signed his new deal Wenger spoke of a desire to mount a convincing challenge for the Premier League title, but that already seems to be over after a 3-1 defeat at Manchester City before the international break that left the Gunners 12 points off the leaders.

Speaking at the club’s annual general meeting last month Wenger said he would discuss his future with the Arsenal board at the end of the season and whilst he insists those comments have been somewhat misinterpreted he did not offer a clear guarantee he would be at the Emirates helm in 2019.

“I said I sit down with the board every end of season and see where we go from there,” Wenger told beIN Sports.

“Sometimes you know, you make a sentence and people turn it the way they would like to see it.

“That's what I said - I have a two-year contract, I will always try to go to the end of my contract but always have the honesty to sit down with the board and see where we go from there. So that's quite simple.”

Wenger admitted at the end of last season that his prevarication over his future had created an “absolutely horrendous psychological environment” after seeing Arsenal miss out on the top four for the first time in his reign.

The 68-year-old will be loath to repeat that distraction next season but while he retains the support of majority shareholder Stan Kroenke he will remain in control of his own destiny.
