Crystal Palace have set the unwelcome Premier League and English football record with five defeats and zero goals scored since the start of a season.

The Eagles fell to a 1-0 loss to Southampton in Roy Hodgson's first game in charge; Shane Long's sixth-minute opener proving enough to condemn the hosts to a fifth successive defeat.

Not only are Palace pointless, but they are also goalless after 450 minutes played which is a new Premier League record, surpassing Newcastle United.

Not only that, and far more significantly, no team of 2,464 others since 1888 have ever started a top-flight season with no goals and no points after five games.

Newcastle began the 2005-06 season without a goal to their name after four games until Charles N'Zogbia scored in the 78th minute to earn a 1-1 draw with Fulham in the fifth game.

The Magpies followed that point up with a 3-0 win at Blackburn and a 1-0 win over Manchester City.

Palace's search for a goal continues, then, with City up next in the league before games against Manchester United and Chelsea.

Huddersfield come to town on Tuesday in the EFL Cup third round.
