Crystal Palace are unsure if Sam Allardyce would be willing to come out of retirement and return to Selhurst Park if they decided to part company with Frank de Boer.
The Dutchman has held onto his job for now following talks with Palace chairman Steve Parish yesterday.
But De Boer is facing an uncertain future after a poor start to life in English football, and Palace are considering a shock move for Allardyce.
Allardyce kept Palace up last season but left two days after the end of the campaign, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family.
The 62-year-old stated he had no ambition to take another job and explained he no longer wanted the 24/7 demands of managing in the Premier League.
It remains to be seen if Allardyce would now be willing to make a surprise return to Palace just three months after quitting.
Palace have lost their first three Premier League games since De Boer took over and the players have struggled to adjust to his more possession-based football.
Allardyce admitted last week that he was surprised Palace appointed the Dutchman because Parish had previously gone with British managers. He said De Boer needed to be “pragmatic” and suggested Palace needed to sort out their defence.
De Boer has been in the job for only 10 weeks but there are worrying signs Palace are not suited to the style of football being introduced by the former Ajax and Inter Milan manager.

It has been suggested Palace are also considering Roy Hodgson and Fulham head coach Slavisa Jokanovic if De Boer cannot turn things around.

Hodgson and Jokanovic were in the frame to replace Allardyce in the summer before Palace opted for De Boer.
Hodgson has been out of work since he left the England job after Euro 2016. Jokanovic has impressed with the job he has done with Fulham.
Palace lost 2-0 at home to Swansea City on Saturday and go into the international break without a point or even a goal from their first three league matches.
De Boer feels he should be given the time to get his ideas across but there are concerns over whether his style of football is suited to a team used to fighting relegation.
