Mauricio Pochettino insists Danny Rose has a long-term future at Tottenham after the defender was given a rousing reception despite controversial comments last summer.

Rose’s 10-minute substitute appearance in the 1-1 draw at Real Madrid on Tuesday was his first since damaging a knee at Sunderland in January - and since criticising Tottenham’s transfer policy and wage structure in a newspaper interview in August.

It remains to be seen what will happen to Rose next summer, as both Manchester clubs and Chelsea showed an interest in him during the last two windows, but Pochettino sees him staying at Tottenham.

The Spurs boss said: "He is happy, his behaviour is fantastic. You could see he helped the team in the final few minutes against Real Madrid.

"His mind is clear that what happened is in the past and we need to move on. He is part of my plans. The past is in the past.

"In life they are young and they can [make] mistakes but most important thing is that they can learn from that. Fans want the best for the team and Danny is our player.

"Our fans are fantastic and they show good love and that they care for our players. He has four years left on his contract."

Rose is unlikely to be fit enough to start Sunday’s home game against Liverpool but may be included in the XI when West Ham visit Wembley in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
