David Moyes said he didn't want to put his name to West Ham's first-half performance following a 4-0 defeat to Everton on Wednesday.

Moyes suffered his second defeat in three games as Hammers boss on a miserable return to Goodison Park.

Wayne Rooney, who was handed his Everton debut by Moyes in 2002, put the Toffees 2-0 up with a double in the first half. Manuel Lanzini then missed from the spot after the break before Rooney spectacularly completed his hat-trick from inside his own half.

Ashley Williams capped a brilliant night for Everton with a late fourth as the home side marked the imminent appointment of Sam Allardyce as manager.

Moyes, who has now lost five out of five meetings with Everton since spell there ended in 2013, expressed his dismay at West Ham's first-half performance, which left them two points adrift of safety and now winless in seven league matches.

"The second half at least I could put my name to the performance - I didn't want to do it for the first, that is for sure," said Moyes, who has overseen a draw at home and two away defeats since succeeding Slaven Bilic.

"We weren't good in the first half, so we didn't deserve anything.

"But I thought when we needed small things to go for us, they didn't - like Wayne's penalty was saved but it came back to him, and Lanzini's was saved but didn't."
