Leon Osman has backed David Moyes to succeed at West Ham, and says he’s amazed by the negative response from the Hammers fans.

The former Everton manager is flying to London for talks with the owners at London Stadium after they sacked Croatian Slaven Bilic following his side’s 4-1 defeat to Liverpool on Satuday night.

Moyes’ recent record makes for grim reading having left Goodison Park for Manchester United, where he was sacked with four games to go in his first season, before heading to Spain and taking charge of Real Sociedad where he was once again dismissed in under a season.

His last role in management was at Sunderland, where he failed to avoid relegation and finished bottom of the Premier League.

The backlash from fans to reports of the Scot’s appointment has been unanimously negative, however, Osman – who made over 300 career appearances under Moyes – says he can’t believe the reaction and that it’s hard to judge his former manager on his roles since Everton.

"It's amazing to see the opposition to his name, with regards to West Ham fans,” Osman told Sky Sports.

"He's obviously had some difficult roles since he left Everton, at Manchester United where he felt like he didn't get enough time, to Sunderland where with all due respect I think it would have been difficult for any manager to go in and do anything with that team.

"It's difficult to get judged on that, I do feel he's still a top manager who will be able to turn West Ham around.”

While he’s had a poor time of late, Osman still feels Moyes has the right characteristics to turn things around in Stratford.

He added: "I think his desire, his will to win and his attention to detail which you don't see when you just see a manager walking up and down the touchline on a Saturday, you don't see the amount of work and the detail that has gone in through the week.

"David Moyes was very passionate about working, getting his coaches involved and working through the week and West Ham will see the benefits of that."
