Harry Kane’s rise at Tottenham has echoes of Gareth Bale, says teammate Ben Davies

Ben Davies believes Harry Kane’s development has echoes of Gareth Bale’s incredible rise in north London after the Tottenham striker completed his sensational September with a double at Huddersfield.

Kane ended up with 13 goals for club and country during the month - seven of them coming in the final eight days, during back-to-back away wins against West Ham, Apoel Nicosia and David Wagner’s newly promoted side.

A product of Tottenham’s academy, 24-year-old Kane had four loan spells elsewhere before fighting his way into Spurs’ senior team and going on to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot in each of the past two seasons.

Davies feels his progress is reminiscent of another iconic figure from Spurs’ recent past - his Wales international team-mate Bale.

Bale joined the club as a 17-year-old and, after a relatively slow start, grew in stature before scoring 26 goals for Spurs in 2012/13 and joining Real Madrid for £85million, at the same age Kane is now.

“They’re totally different players - Harry’s an out-and-out goalscorer and Gaz is a bit of a winger but in terms of development it’s relatively similar,” said left-back Davies. “Harry’s all about goals and if he keeps getting the goals like he does then people have to stand up and take notice. For us as a team, to have somebody like him up top - knowing that if we get a chance then nine times out of 10 it ends up in the back of net - is an amazing feeling. When you put the ball in for somebody like H up top and you can see the goals he’s getting, it makes it easy for you.”

Spurs are set to face Bale in a fortnight’s time when they visit the Bernabeu in the Champions League - and Davies expects the subject will come up as he and the Madrid man now join forces ahead of Wales’ World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and the Republic of Ireland. “For us it’s all about the Wales games but I’m sure we’ll have a chat about it,” said Davies.

Asked if he faces Bale much in training, Davies replied: “We tend to do a bit of team shape so he’s on my side, so that’s a bit of a blessing.”

Davies joins up with his international team-mates in fine form, having contributed a goal and an assist to Spurs’ 4-0 victory at Huddersfield on Saturday. The 24-year-old admits he is keen to ensure Mauricio Pochettino has the toughest possible selection dilemma when Danny Rose eventually returns from his long-term knee injury.

“I just want to keep playing and put a thought in the manager’s mind when we’re both fit,” said Davies. “Danny’s a top player. It’s going to be a challenge when he comes back but it’s one we’re both excited for. In that wing-back position you’re going to get into situations where you’re going to create chances and in the last few games it’s come off.

Who is the current Premier League top scorer?

“I don’t think a strong part of my game is running at people one v one but you’ve got to try your best every time you get in. You’ve got to try to get past your man, or even just create half a yard to be able to put a decent ball in. Overall it’s something I’m always looking to improve.

“When you join a club like Spurs, at the time it’s all about trying to get to play in these games, like against Madrid.

“It’s just about being ready for when the chance comes.”
