Olivier Giroud has revealed the secret to his remarkable ‘scorpion kick’ lies in the dance classes he took as a student.

The Arsenal striker won Fifa’s Puskas Award for the best goal of 2017 last week in recognition of his stunning backheel volley in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on New Year’s Day.

Giroud has developed a habit for the spectacular when he finds the net for Arsenal – he might be a contender for next year’s prize thanks to the acrobatic overhead kick that secured victory over Red Star Belgrade earlier this month.

And a goal that he claimed would “leave a mark on history” was inspired by the classes he took when he was studying to be a PE teacher before joining French second league side Tours in 2008.

"I'm going to have the mickey taken out of me," Giroud told France 2. "It was very bizarre, it wasn't the situation in which I was most at ease. It was part of the curriculum to become a PE teacher.

"But our teacher considered that kind of dancing a form of art, and the move I did could have been part of a choreography of my dance teacher at the time."
