England boss Gareth Southgate confirmed that he would rotate his goalkeepers after handing Hart the No.1 shirt in all of the country’s nine previous qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup.

Southgate is keen to take a look at a number of fringe England players for the final competitive match before next summer’s tournament in Russia, including Butland.

He said of the Stoke goalkeeper: "He has been patient for his opportunity, his form has been good. It's a good opportunity for Jack."

Butland and Hart, who has endured a difficult run of form since Euro 2016, are far from the only ones vying for the starting spot at next summer’s tournament.

Everton’s Jordan Pickford, Southampton’s Fraser Forster and Burnley’s Tom Heaton will all hope to be among the trio of goalkeepers who fly out to Russia at the end of the season.

Southgate added: "We've got great competition for places. Joe was excellent the other night. We've got other good goalkeepers."
