Arsenal have made their first move in the January transfer window as Arsene Wenger has completed a deal for defender Konstantinos Mavropanos.

The Gunners are currently in the midst of a defensive injury crisis, but Mavropanos is considered one for the future and will not be in the frame for first team selection.

The 20-year-old recently represented Greece at Under-21 level after breaking into the PAS Giannina team last term.

Here's what we know so far...

How much will he cost?

The two clubs had been expected to agree a transfer for a fee in the region of £2.2million, though no fee was announced when the deal was confirmed. The defender's contract had 18 months to run.

Is he good enough?

The centre-back is viewed as one for the future. Arsenal plan to loan Mavropanos to Werder Bremen immediately rather make him part of their first-team squad for the second half of the season.

Wenger confirmed that to be the case after Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Wednesday. “He’s not ready to play for us," the Frenchman said.

“We’ll give him out on loan.”

Mavropanos made his debut for PAS Giannina last term and has featured 14 times for the Greek side this season. He made two substitute appearances for Greece Under-21s in 2017.

"We are out there and look of course to do some things," the Wenger said.

"We will do, but when is very difficult to say because that does not depend only on us. We are open to any position for the exceptional player that can give us a plus. It depends a little bit on the injuries as well.

"On the other hand it depends if we manage to extend the contracts of the players who are at the end of their contracts in June."
