Kyle Walker-Peters became the eighth Tottenham academy player to make his debut under Mauricio Pochettino on Sunday — and the 20-year-old was named the man of the match.

The versatile full-back, who played on the left side when England won the Under-20 World Cup in June, started at right-back at St James’ Park, making his first competitive appearance for his club.

In doing so he followed in the footsteps of Josh Onomah, Harry Winks, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Marcus Edwards, Anton Walkes, Shayon Harrison and Filip Lesniak, who have also come through Spurs’ academy and been given debuts by Pochettino. Ryan Mason additionally made his first Premier League appearance under the Argentine.

Pochettino said: “I was very pleased [with Kyle], I felt he fully deserved to be man of the match. To play the way he played showed great maturity.

“In his speech after the game with his trophy [in the dressing room], he was so proud. You can see now how the team is, how the team love to stay all together, and it was a fantastic moment. I’m sure he will remember it forever.”
