Arsenal Women’s manager Pedro Martinez Losa has left the club after three years in charge.

A poor start to the season has seen Arsenal slip to sixth in the WSL table, with a 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City late last month offering a worrying insight into the gap that has opened up between the Gunners and the new powers in the women’s game.

Though Losa led Arsenal to a surprise FA Cup win over Chelsea in 2016 and a Continental Cup triumph a year earlier he was unable to build consistency in the league as the Blues and Manchester City have ended the Gunners’ traditional dominance despite an ambitious recruitment drive that has seen the likes of Heather O’Reilly and Danielle van de Donk join the club.

Assistant manager Ismael Garcia will take charge for Sunday’s WSL trip to Everton.

“It has been an unforgettable three-year journey for me at Arsenal FC,” Losa said. “I wish to express my gratitude, respect and admiration towards all of the first team and youth players that I was lucky enough to work with during my time at the club.

"We played our part in taking the club on to a new level in terms of professionalism. The FA Cup triumph at Wembley and our Continental Cup success are occasions that will forever remain with me.”

Chief executive Ivan Gazidis said: “We are grateful for all Pedro’s hard work over the past three seasons. He has taken us through a significant period of change and has helped put in the foundations for further success in the future.

“These are exciting times for the women’s game and our team is a big part of what we stand for here at Arsenal.

“He always represented the club in a way which strongly reflected our values and we wish him every success in the future.”
