Premier League defenders might just breathe a sigh of relief in the summer of 2019, with Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero hinting that is when he will leave the Premier League leaders.

City’s record goalscorer has found the net 179 times in 265 games since moving to the Etihad in the summer of 2011 and has won two Premier League titles and as many League Cups at the club.

Aguero has long spoken of his desire to return to his native Argentina and Independiente, the club who gave him his debut as a 15 year old in 2003, and said he would be prepared to turn down moves to top European sides to rejoin his former side.

“It came out that Milan and Real Madrid wanted me and - I don’t know where I read it - but they said: ‘They just spoiled Independiente’s dream',” he told reporters while on international duty.

“But the idea was always to go back to Independiente when my contract with City runs out in 2019.

“I have an option to extend one more year with City where it’s the priority but it’s always an option.

“The idea is to go back. Now, they are doing very well and hopefully they can win the cup, but it’s not easy.”

Aguero’s comments appear to differ from City’s announcement in January that Aguero had signed a one-year extension tying him to the club until 2020.
