Manchester City are set to return with an improved offer for Alexis Sanchez after having a bid in the region of £50million rejected by Arsenal.

The Gunners dismissed City’s opening bid – which was understood to not to include a player in exchange – with manager Arsene Wenger reluctant to sanction the 28-year-old’s departure having been adamant all summer he would remain at the club.

However, City are expected to test that resolve further with an improved offer before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Sanchez is not thought to be actively forcing a move away from Arsenal but is hopeful a deal can be reached in time to leave the Gunners this month.

It remains possible City could include Raheem Sterling as part of a second offer and Standard Sport understands the England international would be open to leaving Etihad Stadium.

Wenger is an admirer of both Sterling and Sergio Aguero but City have not yet formally indicated either would be made available and the clubs continue to be some distance apart in negotiations.
