New signing Romelu Lukaku scored twice and Paul Pogba capped an ominous team display with a long-range strike as Manchester United beat West Ham 4-0 in their opening game of the Premier League season on Sunday.

With new recruit Nemanja Matic also excelling in central midfield, United look to have a side that can seriously challenge for their first league title since 2013, Alex Ferguson's final year at the club.

Lukaku finished off a quick counter-attack - sparked by Matic's closing-down of an opponent - to put United ahead in the 33rd minute. The striker added a second with a header from Henrikh Mkhitaryan's free kick in the 52nd minute.

Substitute Anthony Martial ran onto Mkhitaryan's through-ball to slot home a third goal in the 87th minute, and Pogba was given space to curl home in injury time, completing United's biggest league win under Jose Mourinho.

West Ham team news

The Hammers expect defender Aaron Cresswell to be available for today's opener.

Captain Mark Noble has shaken off a minor toe problem which saw the midfielder miss a couple of day's training, but Michail Antonio will not be involved as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury with a run-out for the Under 23s against Everton on Friday night.

Striker Javier Hernandez could feature against his old club, while fellow summer signings Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and teenager Sead Haksabanovic could also make their Hammers debuts.

Forward Andy Carroll (groin), Diafra Sakho (back), midfielder Manuel Lanzini and Cheikhou Kouyate (both knee) all continue their rehabilitation.

Provisional Squad: Hart, Cresswell, Fonte, Reid, Zabaleta, Fernandes, Noble, Arnautovic, Snodgrass, Ayew, Hernandez, Adrian, Ogbonna, Collins, Feghouli, Byram, Masuaku, Haksabanovic.
