Mauricio Pochettino has urged the Tottenham board to sign “new faces to bring new energy” to the Spurs squad.

Tottenham are the only squad in the Premier League not to have made a significant addition to their first team this summer, despite selling right-back Kyle Walker to Manchester City for £50million.

Spurs transfer business has become a matter of increased debate since a controversial interview with Danny Rose last week, in which the defender called on the club to buy players he “doesn’t have to Google”.

Pochettino expects reinforcements to arrive, though he has warned supporters they may have to wait until the dying days of the transfer window. Spurs remain keen on Ross Barkley, though are yet to bid for the £50m-rated Everton midfielder, and have also been linked with Ajax defender Davison Sanchez and Valencia right-back Joao Cancelo.

Asked whether it might be an advantage to have a settled squad after watching his side ease to a 2-0 win over newly-promoted Newcastle, Pochettino laughed: “Now sure it's an advantage to not sign players!

“I think the balance is the most important. We need some new faces to bring new energy in the team. It's always important to challenge your best players. It's true that we are calm and we are strong enough to compete in the same way we did last season.

“But for me we need to sign some new players before the end of the transfer window. I think it's always important to refresh the squad and help the competition between us. We have 10 months ahead of us and we are involved in four competitions.

“The Champions League demands a lot of energy. We need more competition, more quality and more players that can help the team to keep the level that we want to show in every game.”
