Mesut Ozil has become “angry” over Arsenal’s lack of spending in recent transfer windows, according to Robert Pires.

The Germany international has so far refused to extend a contract that is due to expire at the end of the season despite Arsenal having offered new terms worth around £250,000-a-week.

Ozil and his representatives have publically expressed their desire to extend his four-year spell at the Emirates but progress has been sufficiently slow that the likes of Inter Milan and Manchester United have begun considering moves.

Arsenal legend Pires, a regular at the club’s Colney training ground, believes that Ozil has grown frustrated at a lack of ambition in the transfer market.

“Ozil is a warrior who wants to win something,” two-time Premier League champion Pires told Bild. “To me, he seems so angry about the fact that Arsenal hasn’t put together the team with which he can make a difference.

“Arsenal has spent money only for Alexander Lacazette. That is not enough to be at the top.”

Sead Kolasinac was Arsenal’s only other major signing of the summer, joining from Schalke on a free.

Arsene Wenger: Arsenal may be forced to sell Sanchez and Ozil in January

The Gunners allowed the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs and Wojciech Szczesny to depart to free up space in their squad and wage bill, though much of the latter would have been given over to extensions for fellow contract rebel Alexis Sanchez and Ozil had their signatures been secured.

With no sign of significant progress on extensions for either player, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger also admitted for the first-time earlier this month that Ozil and Sanchez could be sold in January rather than being forced to see out their deal.

Neither Ozil nor Sanchez have particularly impressed in a season that has seen Arsenal lose three of their opening eight League games.

A 2-1 defeat at Watford on Saturday led to fans venting their frustration at Wenger but Pires believes the 67-year-old, who signed a new two-year deal at the end of last season despite missing out on Champions League qualification, is the right man for Arsenal.

“It's incredibly difficult to consistently remain at the top in England,” he said.

“But I still believe in Arsenal and first of all in Arsene Wenger. I think it's right he penned a new two-year deal.”
