Spurs kick off their title challenge

Tottenham capitalised on Jonjo Shelvey's senseless sending-off to beat Newcastle 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday, with Dele Alli and Ben Davies scoring in the final half-hour.

Shelvey trod on the right foot of Alli, who was sitting on the ground, as he tried to resume play after a free kick had been awarded.

The 48th-minute incident took place right in front of the referee, at a time when Newcastle was looking comfortable against one of the favourites for the title.

Tottenham immediately took charge of the match and Alli slid in at the far post to steer in a cross from Christian Eriksen in the 61st minute, with the Danish playmaker teeing up Davies to seal the match.

Tottenham switched to Nike for their kit manufacturers last season - and that has led to some curious training tops. Bold, no doubt.

Anyway they're into their rather bland deep blue away kit and out on the pitch. Kick-off is just moments away.

Toby Alderweireld has been offering a confident assessment of Tottenham's chances ahead of kick-off this afternoon:

This is the Premier League and Newcastle are a big club back in the Premier League, so it's up to us to get our levels and if we do that, we'll have a good chance to win this game.

"We're focused and we all want to get a good result."

And Mauricio Pochettino has been discussing that Danny Rose interview, though he seems very eager to move on from the whole saga:

It's true that outside maybe you can see it a bit different. But inside the players are so calm.

"It's a good thing that he apologised to everyone. I forget that all that happened two days ago."

One goal today and Harry Kane reaches his Spurs century. Normally that would be as foregone a conclusion as David Brent's beloved band but the Tottenham striker has never scored in August. Still, if any defence is going to give him a chance to break his duck...

Some intriguing comments from Glenn Hoddle this morning over the Danny Rose saga. The former Spurs captain and boss can see the Tottenham dressing room backing the demands of their team-mate:

Danny Rose will not have walked into an angry dressing room on Thursday morning.

"In fact, deep down his team-mates will be thinking, 'Well done, Danny. You've put your head above the parapet but you're only saying what we're all thinking'."

Well, well, well. A somewhat surprising return to the side for Moussa Sissoko. Is that a case of Pochettino putting his Frenchman in the shop window, or is the record signing going to enjoy a Lamela-like revival in year two?

Good afternoon and welcome to day three of the new Premier League season, and it starts with what could just be a cracker. It's always a pleasure to have Newcastle back in the big time... perhaps unless you're a Tottenham fan.

They'll need no reminding of what happened in the Magpies' last Premier League game but what better way to get the new season underway than a cool, refreshing dish of revenge?

Team news in 10 minutes folks.
