Reece Oxford is set to return to West Ham after his season-long loan at Borussia Monchengladbach was cut short.

The 18-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Championship side Reading, has not featured in the German side’s first team once since joining in June and has been an unused substitute in all six of their Bundesliga games.

Earlier this month Oxford was nominated for Tuttosport’s European Golden Boy award, alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Marcus Rashford, despite not making a top flight appearance in 2017.

Speaking ahead of their Borussia Monchengladbach’s league clash with Hannover 96 this weekend, manager Dieter Hecking made no mention of Oxford leaving, and even spoke of his progression.

“Reece has taken a step forward in the last few weeks,” Hecking told reporters.

“He’s a young, talented centre back and if he gets the chance, he has to make the most of it.”
