Roy Hodgson is "done in football" and Crystal Palace are "lambs to the slaughter" this season, says Joey Barton.

The 70-year-old returned to Selhurst Park, the club where he began his playing career, to replace the sacked Frank De Boer this week but could not prevent the Eagles from a fifth successive loss without scoring.

Palace have become the first team in English top-flight history, dating back to 1888, to lose their first five games of the season and not score and Barton does not back Hodgson to improve their fortunes.

"I'm looking at Roy [Hodgson] as I'm watching the game and he doesn't inspire me," Barton told Talksport. "I'm looking at him thinking, what is he going to do?

"You can understand when Big Sam [Allardyce] or Tony Pulis goes in there, which has happened for Palace in recent years, and they fire the lads up – they get them together – and you can imagine them rattling a few cages.

"Seeing Roy at the end of that England campaign, firstly, he looked like he had a bit of a meltdown in the terms of his persona and the way he projected himself.

"People don't really remember that press conference. He didn't really understand why he was in the press conference, announcing he'd resigned as England manager, but he'd been sacked.

"This guy was done in football for me. I thought it was over and to see him come in and take that Palace job, four games in; haven't scored a goal, with the run-up that was coming – I was thinking 'this is lambs to the slaughter'."

Palace now host Huddersfield Town in the League Cup on Tuesday before a daunting run of back-to-back away games against Manchester City and Manchester United before welcoming Chelsea to Selhurst Park.

Barton continued: "That game against Southampton, who have been struggling themselves, was a game they had to get something from.

"There's a legitimate shot that they'll be eight games in with no goals and no points. Nobody can come back from that.
