Tottenham’s opening victory of their Champions League campaign was marred by the late dismissal of defender Jan Vertonghen.

The Belgian international was adjudged to have elbowed Dortmund’s Mario Gotze in the face as Spurs were reduced to ten men in stoppage time.

While contact was certainly made with the Germany international, signs of intention were less clear, as referee Gianluca Rocchi handed out Vertonghen’s second yellow card of the match.

Vertonghen will now be suspended for Tottenham’s next match, away to APOEL Nicosia.
