Two goals from Dele Alli either side of half-time, before a first Champions League goal in five years from Christian Eriksen, put the icing on the cake for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Cristiano Ronaldo would score his customary goal against Spurs, his tenth in 18 appearances against them, as Madrid grabbed a late consolation.

Spurs were lauded a fortnight ago for recording a 1-1 draw in the Bernabeu, but their demolition of the two-time reigning Champions League winners under the Wembley arch will generate a whole new level of plaudits.

The result will resonate among the Spurs fans in much the same way that their 3-1 win over Inter Milan has since 2010 – almost seven years ago to the day – who were then the champions of Europe.

The result is, without doubt, the most impressive of Pochettino’s tenure at the club, and with it Spurs booked their place in the knockout stages of the competition.
